It’s been in the news recently that fashion designers Dolce and Gabbana referred to IVF children as “Synthetic” and the surrogate mothers are “Wombs for rent”, in an interview to Italian magazine Panorama.

Furious by this statement Elton John, one who fathers two children with his husband, both born through IVF has since began a campaign with the trending hashtag ‘BoycottDolceGabbana’ through social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, also stating “How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic'”. Embed from Getty Images

Many celebrities and supporters of IVF have since backed the campaign, the latest being Madonna. She said via Facebook “All babies contain a soul however they come to this earth and their families”.

Since this has all come about, Gabbana has issued an apology via the Guardian saying: “I’m Sicilian and I grew up in a traditional family, made up of a mother, a father and children. I am very well aware of the fact that there are other types of families and they are as legitimate as the one I’ve known. But in my personal experience, family had a different configuration. That is the place where I learnt the values of love and family.”

Now for those of you who don’t know, IVF is a way of making a child in situations were natural birth methods are not an option. This has helped many different types of families, such as members of the LGBT community as well as infertile women wishing to begin a family.

Interesting enough, the majority of people are siding with Elton John and Madonna in that Dolce and Gabbana are archaic in there views of the world and that we have moved on to a more socially accepting view of less traditional methods. The science itself has offered light in life were all hope would have seized to exist  even for conventional families being dealt unfortunate hands in life.

I met with someone born through IVF, who wishes to remain anonymous, saying “I do understand where the designers are coming from when I heard them say it was against ‘Natural flow of life’, sometimes I do feel unnatural. However I have come from a loving mother and father and no different to my siblings.”

  1. I think Dolce & Gabbana need to keep up with the times like they’re supposed to be with fashion. I agree that some ‘normal’ families can’t have children and IVF is the only option for them! It’s weird that someone born through IVF would say something like that! But anyway I’m all for it!

  2. I think that it IVF is just a way to assist people having children. IVF children are no different to normal children but I also understand where D&G are coming from however I do not condemn what they are saying.
